Liverpool recruitment strategy completely slammed by pundit as summer signing dubbed ‘huge failure’
Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes one of Liverpool’s new recruits this summer has turned into a ‘huge failure’.
The Reds brought in Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho, Calvin Ramsey and Arthur Melo to bolster Klopp’s squad over the summer, but the latter has so far proven to be a disastrous addition.
Arthur only arrived on Merseyside late on deadline day, joining on loan for the season from Juventus.
However, Robinson claims Liverpool’s recruitment team ‘have not covered themselves in glory’ with the signing of the 26-year-old Brazilian.
Arthur has not played since the end of September due to a thigh injury that needed surgery.
And speaking on October 29, Jurgen Klopp could not put a timeframe on the player’s return, adding that his injury is ‘really serious’.
However, Klopp also revealed that Liverpool are not giving up on Arthur and will not cut his loan spell short.
But when asked about what he thought about Arthur’s move to Merseyside, Robinson told Football Insider: “Liverpool’s recruitment team have not covered themselves in glory with that one.
“Listen, you cannot always predict injuries but Arthur’s record is not great.”
Arthur move looks destined to fail
Despite his struggles, Robinson can see why the Reds moved for the player, but that it looks doomed to end in failure.
He added: “Arthur is a top player. But I do not think he is going to get the opportunity to prove that at Liverpool. He is facing an uphill battle to get fit and make an impact before the end of the season.
“It looks like a last-minute signing right now. You would have to say it has been a huge failure thus far.”
Arthur has played just once for Klopp’s side this season, a cameo appearance from the bench against Napoli six days after his arrival at the club.
He also featured twice for the club’s Under-21s to try and improve his fitness levels.
Fresh off their midweek win over Napoli in the Champions League, Liverpool are back in Premier League action on Sunday.
They head to Tottenham looking to move within seven points of the London side in the table.
Klopp’s men are unbeaten in their last 10 games against Spurs. And they also yet to taste defeat in the London side’s new stadium.
And despite having some injury issues of their own, Liverpool will be buoyed by the fact that Tottenham will be missing Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Cristian Romero, while Lucas Moura is also unlikely to feature.
