Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been urged to leave Liverpool and shockingly join Premier League rivals Tottenham, where he could become Hugo Lloris’ successor.

Kelleher is Jurgen Klopp’s backup for Alisson. The 24-year-old only tends to play in cup competitions, or when Alisson is out injured.

Despite Kelleher not getting regular game time, he tends to impress when he is selected. He has proven himself to be a penalty shootout expert, having helped Liverpool to win both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup last season.

Kelleher seems happy at Anfield. But at some point he must decide whether he is going to be Alisson’s understudy for the rest of the Brazilian’s career, or if he is going to join another team and become their first-choice keeper.

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has told the Republic of Ireland international to ‘cement his own legacy’ by achieving a permanent transfer away from Liverpool. And surprisingly, Petit believes Kelleher should to go Spurs and become Lloris’ replacement.

“Caomihin Kelleher should consider a move away and a club that he would fit in perfectly is Tottenham,” Petit said during a recent interview (via the Irish Mirror).

“Hugo Lloris is 36, he has had a few injuries and has retired from the national team. He is not the future anymore.

“(Fraser) Forster is also 34, so Tottenham may need a refresh in that department.

Tottenham urged to land ‘really good’ Liverpool star

“Kelleher is 24 years old. In the cup fixtures last season, especially against Chelsea, he was really good.

“If he wants to cement his own legacy, he should leave and join Tottenham.”

It is not often that Liverpool players are told to join Spurs, especially ones with as little experience as Kelleher. But this transfer does make sense.

After all, Lloris is likely to retire when his Spurs contract expires at the end of next season, so the north London outfit do not have too long to find a replacement.

They had been looking at Jordan Pickford, but he has signed a new deal at Everton. Other options such as Emi Martinez and David Raya will be fairly expensive.

Kelleher should not cost as much, even though he plays for one of Spurs’ top-four rivals. His lack of experience on the big stage means Liverpool cannot charge a huge amount of money for him.

It might be worth Spurs taking a punt on Kelleher and bringing him in as Lloris’ successor. The Cork-born star will do all he can to make himself a big hit at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as it would be his first spell as a club’s number one.

On the flip side, some Spurs fans will want a much bigger goalkeeping name to join. Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak or Napoli star Alex Meret are two potential alternatives.

This situation is certainly one to keep an eye on during the summer transfer window. It would be a huge shock if Kelleher went to Spurs, but stranger things have happened in terms of transfers.

Meanwhile, Manchester City will try and beat Liverpool to the signing of a £100m-rated star, according to a report.
