Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson reckons Erik ten Hag could turn Ronaldo into a “baby” next season if he provides him with the chances.

The Portugal international has asked the Red Devils hierarchy to accept any ‘satisfactory offers’ for him this summer as he looks to engineer a move away from the club.

There have been rumours that Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern Munich are interested in his services but there is only one concrete offer on the table from an unnamed Saudi Arabian club,

Man Utd have found the new Tevez-Rooney-Ronaldo – as long as Cristiano doesn’t ruin it

He currently looks more likely to stay than go with a lack of options on the table and new Man Utd boss Ten Hag has admitted that he’s keen to work with the striker.

On Ronaldo, Lawrenson told Paddy Power: “The first thing you look at with Cristiano Ronaldo is his goals. It’s whether the manager thinks - yes, he’s not going to press but have you got enough players in the team who will press for him? And if you have, you keep him, because there’s no doubt about it when you give him the chance, he scores.

“With Ten Hag’s own men in the dressing room, it completely changes the dynamic. There were fractures in the dressing room last season – that that was there for everyone to see. Ronaldo just loves scoring, and if suddenly, the team makes even more chances for him, he’ll be like a baby – he’ll love it! Instead of getting four chances in the game he might get eight or 10 and score a third of those at the very least.

“Ten Hag must hit the ground running and if the first three or four games they, for example, win two, draw one and lose one, he will get criticised - but he needs time. The one thing you don’t get as a manager at a massive club is time.”

On the new Man Utd manager, Lawrenson added: “Ten Hag doesn’t just have to manage the team, he’s got to mould the team and get the players in and playing the way he wants. The Ajax players – he knows straight away about them.

“They’ve fallen behind, but they’ve got so much wealth - they will come back. Ten Hag might be the one to do it. The right assistant manager is a massive thing in the big clubs because, often, the number two is like the arm around the shoulder of players when they’ve been left out, rather than somebody having to go to the manager and knock on his door and ask why they’re not playing.

“United will be fine, but they won’t be up there winning the league for a while, just competing for the top four with the other big clubs. Looking at the players that United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham have signed or trying to sign shows you how far they think they are behind Liverpool or Man City.”
