Jurgen Klopp feels Liverpool are learning how to win again, and their victory over Tottenham was a long time coming for one reason.
Klopp’s side had not been in the best of form in the league before today. Indeed, the Reds had won just four of their 12 Premier League games.
They had succumbed to shock losses in both of their last two league games.
The first was a 1-0 defeat to newly-promoted Nottingham Forest. The second, likely an even more painful loss, saw Leeds United scored their winner against the Reds in the 89th minute to make it 2-1.
That left Klopp’s side in 10th place, miles from where they want to be. A trip to third-placed Tottenham represented a massive challenge in the form they were in.
However, Liverpool got out of the blocks early. Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, before doubling the lead just before half time.
Things got nervy for Liverpool in the second half, as Harry Kane halved the Reds’ advantage. However, they managed to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
The win lifted Liverpool up into eighth place, and was just their fifth league victory of the season.
Liverpool ‘learn winning’ again
As well as that, it was the Reds’ first away league win since they beat Southampton in May. Klopp feels that victory was a long time coming, and crucially, he feels his side are learning how to win games again.
“We played an extremely good first half and in the second we put in a shift and did really well,” he said, via BBC Sport.
“We just kept fighting, it was a big passion. In the first half we were the better side and scored two wonderful goals. It’s a long time ago since we won away in the Premier League so it was relief at the end.
“You need to learn winning again and that’s how it starts, with massive resistance. It was clear they would come back but we came through it and it’s all good.”
Victory means a lot
Klopp was also clearly happy that his side were able to beat one of the league’s top four. He admitted that the victory was a relief, after the tough period of late.
“The win meant a lot today. I just let out a deep sigh. Massive game for us. Really really good first half and then a difficult second half. Tottenham takes all the risks when they are losing in the second half,” he said.
“It’s a super intensive season. Because it’s a while that we won an away game, we can’t just think that everything will be fine. We know we have to fight. It’s big for us. Two wins in a row, yes in different competitions.”
Klopp also expects that more away wins will come off the back of this one.
“I don’t think we have a massive problem away from home. Yes Anfield is a huge plus for us. We won away games just in the Champions League. I’m really happy that we could tick the box of winning an away game in the Premier League,” he added.
