Liverpool have a perfect opportunity to snare a midfielder that Atletico Madrid are willing to sell, according to a report.
The Reds have not been close to the side that they have been over the past few seasons. Indeed, they won the Champions League in 2019, followed by the Premier League the next season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side then pushed Manchester City right to the wire last season.
Indeed, Liverpool finished one point shy of the eventual Champions, on 92 points.
This season, they have been far below the standards that were set over the past few campaigns. To this point, they have won just four of their 12 league games, and are firmly mid-table.
The Reds have been linked with a number of improvements for their squad in January. Graeme Souness feels that Klopp should be making “demands” to the board to sign some fresh talent.
Some new faces in the squad could certainly help for Liverpool to get back to their dominant selves.
The club have been linked with a number of players who could really add another dynamic to the side.
Reds may have Marcos Llorente transfer chance
An opportunity to sign a great player, who once broke Liverpool hearts, could be on the cards. That player is Marcos Llorente, as Atletico Madrid may be willing to see him leave, as per Mundo Deportivo.
Llorente produced a double sucker punch against Liverpool in the 2019/20 Champions League round of 16. Two late goals from the Spaniard helped Atletico to overcome Klopp’s men.
That could have left a lasting impression, as in 2020, Liverpool were said to have been considering an approach.
While nothing came of that, the fact that Llorente is now up for sale could lead Liverpool to look into the transfer.
New talent could help Reds
A midfielder like Llorente could give the Reds a big boost. Fitness issues have plagued a number of the club’s midfield assets of late.
What’s more, two of the four most-used central midfield players this season – Jordan Henderson and Thiago – are over the age of 30.
Another – Fabinho – is soon to hit the 30 years old mark, too. Clearly, Liverpool have not been the same side of late, and winning the midfield battle is one of the most crucial elements of football.
Freshening up the stocks of midfielders could be a big help for the Reds going forwards.
Llorente is 27, and should be in the prime years of his career. He has clearly shown his class at times before, and Liverpool know all about that.
A move to Anfield could be the perfect one for all parties, given Atletico apparently want to see the back of Llorente.
