Liverpool are reportedly ‘exploring’ a deal to sign former midfield target Matheus Nunes from Wolves.

Nunes joined Wanderers for a club-record fee last summer but has failed to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

The Brazil-born midfielder was linked with a host of top clubs last summer and had been in talks with the Reds for months before joining the Molineux side.

Manchester City were another team interested in signing the player after two terrific campaigns with Sporting Lisbon.

Nunes has shown in fits and starts why Wolves paid around £38million to sign him, but overall, has struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

Having said that, he is only 24 years old and has time to come good in England, and he may have the opportunity to do so at Anfield.

This is according to The Telegraph, who claim Liverpool are ‘exploring a deal’ to sign Nunes.

The Reds are in dire need of midfield recruitments with Jude Bellingham believed to be their number-one target.

They have also been linked with Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez, however, he is reportedly very close to joining Chelsea.

The report states that Liverpool were ‘close’ to signing Nunes last summer after reaching an ‘agreement’ with the player.

A deal is ‘very much alive this month’ after Liverpool ‘made a commitment to bid for him’.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could sign Nunes this month, but he would not join the squad until the end of the season.

Despite his slow start in the Premier League, it is said that Wolves would receive around £44m for their club-record signing.

This would fit Wolves’ model of signing a young player to sell for a profit. They previously sold Diogo Jota to Liverpool for around £40m, making a £30m profit.

Klopp is on the search for a new midfielder and will surely bring in someone in the winter transfer window. The Reds have already completed the signing of forward Cody Gakpo.

Bellingham probably won’t leave Borussia Dortmund this month, though a summer transfer does seem likely with Manchester City and Real Madrid also keen.

Every time Liverpool fail to win there is an inquest about their current midfield options.

After initially saying the club’s summer transfer business was over, Klopp U-turned, and midfielder Arthur Melo joined on deadline day. The Brazilian has struggled for game time and is currently sidelined with a long-term injury.

As well as Nunes, Fernandez and Bellingham, Liverpool have been linked with Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans, West Ham’s Declan Rice and PSV’s Ibrahim Sangare.
