Liverpool look set to suffer a blow to their hopes of landing a top Serie A midfielder in the January window, with a new deal on the brink of being signed.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is known to be keen on adding another central midfielder this month, as he looks to build on the addition of Cody Gakpo in the club’s chase for a top-four finish.
A number of names have been mentioned as potential targets, with AC Milan’s Ismael Bennacer among them.
The Algeria international is highly regarded in Italy. However, with his contract running down, Klopp was hoping to snatch the player away from the San Siro.
The 25-year-old is a core member of Stefano Pioli’s squad. Indeed, he played an important role in their title win last season.
The midfielder’s current contract runs out in the summer of 2024. But Milan have made it a priority to get a new one agreed for a player they see playing a huge role in the future.
As reported by TMW, Bennacer is ready to sign a new contract that will see him earn €4.2m net per season plus €300,000 in add-ons, lasting until June 2027. That deal is also expected to include a €50m release clause, which will be valid from the summer of 2024.
Bennacer deal expected in next 24 hours
The report adds that lawyers are now working to finalise the remaining details. With the deal expected to be signed in the next 24 hours.
The news will come as a blow to Klopp’s hopes of luring the player to England. In turn, it will force the Anfield chief to switch his focus to more available targets.
Benfica star Enzo Fernandez has once again emerged as a potential target after Chelsea’s move for the player collapsed.
Impressive Fulham star Joao Palhinha is also been tipped to head to Anfield, having previously been linked with the Reds.
Liverpool will, however, face a fight with Tottenham for the midfielder – although the Cottagers are desperate to keep hold of their summer signing.
The Reds are back in action on Saturday when they head to Brighton in the Premier League.
