Reports in Spain have revealed that Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti could be facing the sack, with Liverpool potentially playing a part in determining the former Everton man’s future.

Liverpool are preparing for the second leg of their Champions League clash with Real Madrid, which takes place on Wednesday. The Spaniards will be protecting a 5-2 lead on home turf after shocking Liverpool at Anfield last month.

However, their progress into the quarter-finals is not a foregone conclusion. After their win over Espanyol at the weekend, defender Eder Militao named two Liverpool players he is particularly wary of ahead of the return leg.

Of course, Liverpool overcoming their three-goal deficit would be a monumental result. And it has now emerged that, in the perhaps unlikely event that it does happen, it could have wider consequences.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid being eliminated from the Champions League could lead to them sacking Carlo Ancelotti in the summer.

Ancelotti has been facing a few questions in the Spanish capital recently. Real’s defence of the La Liga title has been a weak one; they are currently nine points behind rivals Barcelona after 25 games.

They also lost the first leg of their Copa Del Rey semi-final to Barcelona, as well as the Supercopa De Espana final during January.

Therefore, the reigning Champions League holders will be aiming to make further progress in Europe, while battling in the second leg of the Copa Del Rey semi-final, in their quest to avoid an unthinkable season without a trophy.

Carlo Ancelotti pressure an unwelcome distraction for Real Madrid

It is not exactly the kind of thing Ancelotti will want to be reading while his players prepare for their next game against Liverpool. On paper, after what they managed on Merseyside, this should be a tie they are confident of moving beyond.

But Liverpool have enjoyed some memorable comebacks before, which might already be in the backs of the minds of those who might want Ancelotti out of Madrid.

The report claims that the former Everton and Chelsea boss might only have two games to save his job. After the Liverpool match, it will be El Clasico at the weekend in La Liga.

Should Real fail to cut the gap with Barcelona after what would have been a shock exit from the Champions League, Ancelotti would be “sentenced”, it is said.

Of course, this all seems quite hypothetical for now, but it seems there is some unrest in the camp. Who knows, but it might play into Liverpool’s hands ahead of Wednesday’s return leg.

That said, Liverpool have had their own issues on the pitch to fix recently. Their season has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, so it remains to be seen what Wednesday will be for them.
