Liverpool soccer fans celebrated the long-awaited Premier League trophy’s arrival in Merseyside and a victory against Chelsea on Wednesday night, July 22, making a mess outside the Anfield stadium.
Chelsea fell 5-3 to Liverpool on Wednesday night, encouraging fans already gathered to witness the team raise the Premier League trophy to continue their celebrations into the night, though the Merseyside Police had issued a dispersal warning for the crowds.
Liverpool City Council shared a video of the celebration’s aftermath on Twitter, as well as city cleanup crews tackling the mess on Thursday morning.
A statement from the Liverpool football club thanked the crews “who did incredible work this morning cleaning up Anfield and surrounding areas.”
The club reminded fans that restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic should not be ignored: “When it is safe to do so we will celebrate,” the team said in the statement. “Until then, protecting our city is the priority.” Credit: Liverpool City Council via Storyful
