Liverpool have activated the clause that is the final step in their quest to sign Alexis Mac Allister, and the mind-boggling transfer fee is actually far lower than you might expect.

A midfield revamp is priority number one at Anfield this summer. With Arthur Melo, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all departing, an overhaul is now a necessity and no longer a luxury.

Brighton’s Argentine World Cup winner, Alexis Mac Allister, is the player Jurgen Klopp has turned to first.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has already passed a medical and given the greenlight to the contract put forward by the Reds.

Mac Allister is poised to triple his wages from £50,000-a-week to £150,000-a-week. A five-year deal running until 2028 will be inked.

All that remained was for Liverpool was to activate the clause in Mac Allister’s contract over the transfer fee. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have done exactly that.

Indeed, Romano tweeted the Reds have “triggered the clause to sign the midfielder”. The final documents are currently in the process of being signed, while Romano gave the deal his signature “here we go” confirmation.

While Mac Allister to Liverpool had been speculated for some time, the cost of the transfer fee had caused rampant debate.

Indeed, initial figures around the £70m mark were mentioned before reports emerged of the actual fee being far lower.

£60m, £55m, £50m and more recently £45m had all been put forward by one outlet or another. But according to Romano, the true number is even lower than the lowest estimate.

Romano concluded “Liverpool have just signed Alexis Mac Allister for… £35m.”

Such a fee can only be viewed as an incredible bargain for Liverpool who will have plenty of funds left over for additional midfield moves.

To that end, the club are known to have opened talks over signing French pair, Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone.

Kone (Borussia Monchengladbach) is expected to cost around €45m (approx. £38.6m).

Nice’s Thuram, meanwhile, will set Liverpool back anywhere between €40m-€60m (approx. £34.5m-£51.7m) depending on how difficult Nice make life for Liverpool.
