Sabah Election 2020: Official final tally — GRS secures 38 seats to Warisan’s 32

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 26 — [11.55pm] The Election Commission has announced the results of all 73 seats up for grabs in the 16th Sabah state election.

The official tally is Warisan with 29 seats, Perikatan Nasional (PN) 17, Barisan Nasional (BN) 14, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) seven, Independent candidates three, PKR two and Upko one.

Hence, PN, BN and PBS, which are allied under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), won 38 seats against Warisan — allied with PKR and Upko — that won 32.

[11.50pm] Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to make an appearance on the national broadcaster RTM in 15 minutes to announce the coalition’s victory in Sabah.

[11.40pm] The loose coalition of Perikatan Nasional (PN), Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) known as Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) officially reached 37 seats after the Election Commission (EC) confirmed that N51 Sungai Manila was won by BN candidate Mokran Ingkat with a 4,585 majority.

Warisan Plus, who is allied with PKR, DAP and Amanah, currently has 28 seats, while Independent candidates won three out of the 73 state seats up for grabs.

GRS now has the simple majority required to form the state government.

[11.30pm] This is the official seat tally for the 16th Sabah state election, as taken from the Election Commission’s website:

Umno — 7

[11:10pm] Warisan’s Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi officially won N61 Segama with a 2,168-vote majority.

He secured 4,864 votes to beat his closest rival Perikatan Nasional’s Aljen Johnny (2,696). In the eight-cornered fight, all other six other candidates lost their deposits

[11.05pm] Sabah Deputy Perikatan Nasional Chief Datuk Masidi Manjun officially retained N37 Karanaan with a 3,782-vote majority, for a total of 6,696 votes.

He defeated Awasi Ganie @ Yasin Abdul Ghani from Warisan who only managed to get 1,882 votes. Two other candidates lost their deposits.

[11pm] Sabah Barisan Nasional deputy chief Datuk Yakub Khan officially secured N16 Karambunai with a mere 16-vote majority, garnering a total of 5,180 votes.

His closest rival. Warisan’s Ahmad Jais Otong, who won 5,164 votes in the six-cornered fight. Four other candidates lost their deposits.

[10.48pm] STAR president Datuk Jeffrey Kitingan officially retained N39 Tambunan, which he contested under Perikatan Nasional, with a convincing 6,792-vote majority.

The six-cornered fight only saw Laurentius Nayan Ambu from Upko managing to get back his deposit.

Popular musician Jimmy Palikat, who contested as an Independent, only managed to get 60 votes.

[10.45pm] Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal officially retained N65 Senallang with a 4,631-vote majority.

In the five-cornered fight, Shafie garnered 6,363 votes against Norazman Utoh Alam from Perikatan Nasional (1,732). Four other candidates lost their deposits.

[10.40pm] Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin officially won N58 Lamag — one of 13 new seats in the state election with a majority of 661 votes, garnering a total of 3,035.

His closest rival in the five-cornered fight, Mohd Ismail Haji Ayob, managed to get 2,374 votes. Three other candidates lost their deposits.

[10.35pm] Upko vice-president Datuk Ewon Benedick officially retains N11 Kadamaian with a 3,459-vote majority, garnering 6,823 votes in the six-cornered fight.

He beat PBS’ Demis Rumanti (3,364) and Barisan Nasional’s Duanis Mogirong @ Djuanis (2,050). Meanwhile, three other candidates lost their deposit.

[10.30pm] Warisan Plus candidate Phoong Jin Zhe from DAP won N21 Luyang convincingly with a 14,521-vote majority and garnering 15,510 votes in the six-cornered fight.

In 2018, Janine Lasimbang from DAP won the seat with 12,408-vote majority.

[10.25pm] Unofficial results have indicated that Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) president Datuk Seri Anifah Aman lost the four-cornered fight in N40 Bongawan.

He was up against incumbent from Warisan, Daud Yusuf, as well as Yusuf’s cousin from Barisan Nasional (BN), Ag Lahap Ag Bakar @ Ag Syairin, and their nephew Mohd Azree Abd Ghani mewakili Parti Liberal Demokratik (LDP).

[10.20pm] Sabah PKR chief Datuk Christina Liew officially retained N20 Api-Api with a majority of 5,347, garnering 7,796 votes.

She beat PBS’ Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai (2,449).

All other candidates in the nine-cornered fight lost their deposits, including LDP president Datuk Chin Su Phin who only managed to win 317 votes.

[10.15pm] Warisan’s vice-president Datuk Peter Anthony officially retained N42 Melalap with a 1,719 majority. He secured 5,245 votes, defeating PBS deputy president Datuk Radin Malleh (1,359) and BN’s Jamawi Jaafar (3,526).

[9.58pm] Warisan’s Rina Jainal officially won N70 Kukusan by the skin of her teeth, edging out  Barisan Nasional’s Chaya Sulaiman by just 10 votes.

Rina bagged 2,834 votes against Chaya who got 2,824 votes.

Others participating in the seven-cornered fight were Parti Cinta Sabah’s Ismail @ Taufik Muin, Lee Boon King (Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah), Wong Jin Soon (Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah), Ismail Idris (Usno) and Rosdiansah Mohd Nor from Sabah United People’s party (PPRS).

[9.55pm] Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) secretary-general Datuk Jahid Jahim officially retained Tamparuli seat by a comfortable 3,517-vote margin.

His closest rival was PKR’s Alijus@Mohd Ali Sipil who got 3,326 votes followed by Denis Gimbah from Parti Cinta Sabah (1,001 votes) and Dr Raymond Alfred from Liberal Democratic Party (377 votes).

PBS is allied with Perikatan Nasional and Barisan Nasional under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

[9.50pm] Perikatan Nasional’s Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan officially won Apas seat by a margin of  2,049 votes. He polled 6,252 votes against Warisan’s Amrullah @ Ambrullah Kamal who got 4,203 votes. Two other candidates lost their deposits.

[9.45pm] In official results, Warisan’s Manis Buka Mohd Darah retains her N66 Bugaya seat with a majority of 6,005 votes.

She garnered 8,557 votes against closest contender Perikatan Nasional’s Mohd Daud Tampokong who got 2,552 votes in the seven-cornered battle. The other five other candidates lost their deposits.

[9.40pm] Perikatan Nasional’s Datuk Hajiji Noor managed to retain his N12 Sulaman seat by a 3,099-vote majority in official results.

The tally showed he got 5,919 votes against Warisan’s Datuk Aliasgar Basri who garnered 2,820 votes.

Another candidate from Parti Cinta Sabah, Rekan Hussein, lost his deposit as he only got 253 votes.

At this time, the incumbent Warisan Plus coalition has 20 seats. Independent candidates won three seats and the United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) has one seat.

The unofficial results for 12 more seats are currently unavailable.

[9.20pm] Usno de facto chief Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia has unofficially won the six-sided fight for N08 Pintasan.

The former Dewan Rakyat Speaker was up against Warisan’s Mohd Safian Saludin, Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Fairuz Renddan, Parti Cinta Sabah’s (PCS) Padlan Haji Samad, Roslan Mayahman of Sabah People’s Unity Party (PPRS) dan PBS Deputy President Datuk Almudin Kaida who was standing as an independent.

Usno contested 42 out of 73 seats in this state election.

[9.11pm] Unofficial: Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi of Warisan has seemingly defied the odds by winning N61 Segama.

The former minister in the Pakatan Harapan Cabinet was heavily criticised after he purportedly likened the bloody battle between Malaysian Armed Forces and Sulu terrorists in Kampung Tanduo, Sabah to a war between “chickens” and “dogs” last week.

[9pm] Unofficial: Despite hours to go for the vote counting, early tallies have suggested that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah — an Opposition coalition comprising Perikatan Nasional (PN), Barisan Nasional and Parti Bersatu Sabah — is set to form the new Sabah state government.

Unofficial results show it leads in at least 35 seats, while Warisan Plus trails behind with 20 seats.

A majority of 37 seats out of 73 seats is needed to form the state government.

[8.42pm] The Sabah Perikatan Nasional (PN) command centre claims Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has unofficially won 36 seats along with Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).

PN information chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali was spotted arriving at the command centre earlier.

If true, this means the Opposition is one seat short of the minimum 37 required to claim a simple majority in the Sabah state assembly.

[8.40pm] The Election Commission has officially confirmed Parti Warisan Sabah’s first victory in the Sulabayan state seat with a 3,245 majority.

Warisan’s Jaujan Sambakong obtained 5,747 votes compared to his closest rival, Barisan Nasional’s Abdul Manan Indanan, who clinched 2,502 votes. Another candidate, Alahuddin Mohd Sarah of Parti Cinta Sabah only garnered 75 votes.

[8.35pm] Unofficial: Sabah Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Datuk Hajiji Noor has won his seat in Sulaman. He was up against Parti Cinta Sabah Datuk Rekan Hussein and Datuk Aliasgar Basri of Warisan.

[8.34pm] Perikatan Nasional’s Lubuk candidate Samad Jamri has won the Lubuk state seat, the Election Commission officially announced.

Samad polled 2,701 votes compared to his closest rivals from United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko), who obtained 1,493 votes and independent candidate Abdul Rahman Kongkawang, who received 1,441 votes.

[8.29pm] Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has won in Usukan. The former communication and multimedia minister lost a four-cornered fight for the Kota Belud parliamentary seat in GE14.

[8.27pm] Unofficial: Sabah Barisan Nasional chief and Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has won the Lamag state seat. The seat was one of the 13 new state constituencies.

[8.26pm] Unofficial: At the time of writing, the coalition of Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional and Party Bersatu Sabah are leading with 22 seats to Warisan’s 12.

[8.15pm] It is understood that Warisan Plus and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) are now tied with 10 seats each.

According to a breakdown by The Borneo Post, Warisan has secured four seats and DAP six, while the GRS allies Bersatu has five, STAR one, and two each for Umno and PBS.

[8.06pm] Unofficial results show Bingkor incumbent Perikatan Nasional friendly-Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) Robert Tawik successfully retaining his seat.

Early tally shows him in a comfortable lead over his closest rival, Peter Saili of DAP who is contesting under the logo of Parti Warisan Sabah.

[7.52pm] Unofficial results show United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) president Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau has lost his seat in Kiulu.

The seat was won by Datuk Johniston Bangkuai of the Perikatan Nasional and Party Bersatu Sabah coalition.

[7.43pm] Unofficial: Perikatan Nasional has won four seats—Tambunan, Sulaman, Klias and Paginatan.

In the Tamparuli seat next to Kiulu, PBS secretary general Datuk Jahid Jahim is also leading and is expected to win his seat.

[7.45pm] Warisan Plus has two more in the bag after DAP’s Phoon Jin Zhe and Jannie Lasimbang confirmed they have both retained their seats of Luyang and Kapayan respectively.

[7.30pm] Unofficial: Calvin Chong has retained the Elopura seat while Justin Wong has held onto the Sri Tanjong seat.

Both men are incumbents from DAP, which is contesting under the Warisan logo for the first time in the state election.

This means, at time of writing, the unofficial tally is Warisan Plus has four seats to Barisan Nasional’s one.

[7.13pm] Warisan Plus has unofficially secured its second win after incumbent Phoong Jin Zhe of DAP is said to have retained the state seat of Luyang.

At the time of writing, Phoong has secured more than 8,960 votes or 91 per cent of the total votes counted.

[7.06pm] Unofficial results have it that incumbent Tan Lee Fatt of DAP has retained the Likas seat in what had been a seven-cornered fight.

[7pm] Barisan Nasional is leading in two seats, Sekong and Lamag. The latter has now turned into a straight fight between Umno’s Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin and Mohd Ismail Ayub from Warisan.

Warisan in leading in Sindumin, while PKR is ahead in Sook and Upko has the upper hand in Nabawan.

[6.55pm] Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has tweeted unofficial results indicating that Andi Muhammad Suryadi has retained the Tanjung Batu seat for Barisan Nasional.

[6.30pm] An unofficial tally has put DAP in the lead by a convincing margin in Likas, Luyang, Kapayang, Elopura, Tanjong Papat and Sri Tanjong.

The same cannot be said of Bingkor, however, where early results indicate incumbent Robert Tawik @ Nordin from Star looks set to retain his seat.

DAP is contesting seven seats under the Warisan logo for the first time in the state election.

[6pm] Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh has told national news agency Bernama that he expects the full results of the election to be available by about 10pm tonight.

[5pm] Voting has officially ended and all polling stations across Sabah are now closed.

The vote counting process is expected to begin shortly.

A total of 2,540 channels at 741 polling centres were opened for the 73 state constituencies at 7.30am to enable voters to pick a government for the next five years.

A total of 1,088,711 voters were eligible to vote today.
