'Little Amal' puppet greeted by the Pope at the Vatican

‘Little Amal’ was greeted by Pope Francis

Location: Vatican City

The puppet of a Syrian refugee girl is traveling across Europe

as part of a 4,970-mile walk

to raise awareness of the plight of young refugees

After her stop at the Vatican, she will continue her journey

through Germany, Belgium, France, and the UK

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) CARDINAL, MICHAEL CZERNY, SAYING:

"It is very emotional to welcome a small unaccompanied migrant who is looking for her family. Amal reminds us that there are many among us whom we do not see. We see her because she is over three meters tall, but the others are hidden and we are here to remember them and to recognize those who need help."

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ROME RESIDENT, SARA SUSSA, SAYING: "She represents hope, hope for these children. Our children are safe in their homes and with their families while migrant children do not have these possibilities. It seems like they do not have these types of rights, when it should be otherwise. These children deserve, like ours, to be safe and happy with their families."
