Lisbon's unsung superheroes keep city running

The city run by superheroes

Location: Lisbon, Portugal

Council workers wearing costumes

carried out their daily duties

as part of a city campaign

to recognize their ‘superhuman role’

in keeping the capital running

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) PRESIDENT OF SANTO ANTONIO PARISH COUNCIL, VASCO MORGADO, SAYING:

"The goal was to try and find a way to honor those who work beside us and with us at the parish council, those who continued to work and help those most in need. As this number increased exponentially, I tried to find a way to put the workers on top, where they deserve to be. The team did not turn their backs on the fight and everyone is doing their best. We went from 80 to 300 and nobody put their arms down and gave up and we had to find a way to say thank you."

The local council has 64 workers

from garbage collectors to delivery drivers

who have welcomed their new uniforms

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) COUNCIL WORKER IN DC VILLAIN HARLEY QUINN COSTUME, INES GOMES, SAYING:

"This is another motivator for us to come into work. I think the president has thought of a great initiative and we all accepted it with great pleasure."
