Lisa Marie Presley Memoir To Be Published Posthumously By Random House In Collaboration With Daughter Riley Keough

The memoir of Lisa Marie Presley, the singer-songwriter daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley who died one year ago, will be published by Random House in collaboration with Presley’s actor-daughter Riley Keough, the publishing house has announced.

Described by the publisher as a “raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir [that] will lift the veil on one of America’s most storied families,” the still-untitled book will be published on October 15 along with an audiobook edition read by Riley and including what Random House says are “never-before-heard recollections in Lisa Marie’s own voice.

Before her death last January, Presley, her publisher says, asked Keough to help in the finishing of the long-gestating memoir. In the announcement of the book release, Random House indicated that Keough “carried a guilt” that the memoir had not been finished at the time of Presley’s death and feared the world “would never know the loving, joyful, and caring woman that she knew and grieved.”

Keough listened to many hours of tape recordings her mother had recorded for the book. “She listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs at Graceland, just the two of them, a sanctuary from the chaos of her life,” according to Random House.

The book also will address “Lisa Marie’s complicated relationship with her mother Priscilla” and about growing up in the public spotlight including her marriages to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage. Presley also talked about “the shattering loss of her son, Riley’s brother Benjamin Keough, to suicide.”

Keough said in a statement, “Few people had the opportunity to know who my mom really was, other than being Elvis’s daughter. I was lucky to have had that opportunity and working on preparing her autobiography for publication has been a privilege, albeit a bittersweet one. I’m so excited to share my mom now, at her most vulnerable and most honest, and in doing so, I do hope that readers come to love my mom as much as I did.”

The book will be composed mostly of Lisa Marie’s words, with Keough filling in the blanks from her own memory and those closest to her mother. The publisher promises the memoir will be “the most intimate look at the Presley family to date.”

North American publishing rights were acquired by Random Hiouse VP, Editor-in-Chief Ben Greenberg from CAA. The publishing deal was announced today by Sanyu Dillon, President of the Random House Group, who said, “We are so honored to publish Lisa Marie’s memoir with Riley’s thoughtful collaboration. Lisa Marie led a truly singular life, and we know this book, brought to publication with the guidance of her daughter, will be a beautiful legacy not only for her children but for the generations of people who have loved her.”

The audiobook will be released by Penguin Random House Audio.

Hollywood has addressed the Presley phenomenon twice recently, first with Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 Elvis (eight Oscar nominations) and currently with Sofia Coppola’s considerably less flattering (to Elvis) Priscilla, which focuses on the Elvis-Priscilla relationship that began when Priscilla was barely in her teens. The latter film is widely considered to be a contender in this year’s Oscar race. Before her death, Lisa Marie had expressed her opposition to Coppola’s approach.
