Malaysian actress Janna Nick, whose real name is Nurul Jannah Muner, has quit Twitter and Instagram and reported K-pop fans to the police after a movie produced by her production house offended them.
Fans of K-pop sensation BlackPink were offended that Jannah’s production company had disrespectfully named a character after singer Lisa, urging thousands to form an online campaign to cancel the actress, who was also the director of the teenage romcom Delen. The movie featured the character “Lisa Blackpig,” played by newcomer Annie Mosha.
“I hope the police find the owners of the accounts who have provoked and slandered me,” Jannah, 26, tweeted before her social media accounts went dark. “I have given the authorities all the relevant screenshots so they can take action against these cybercrimes.”
The teenage romcom, which marked Jannah’s directorial debut, premiered on television on Feb. 13, a day after the character “Lisa Blackpig” was promoted on the Janna Nick Studios’ Instagram page, describing the character as an “attention seeker.” Janna also stars in the telemovie as Emily, alongside actor Sean Lee, who plays the main character Delen.
When fellow actor Nazim Othman joked about the name in the comments, Jannah replied with “oink oink.” After this article was published, Nazim apologized to K-pop fans about his comment questioning Jannah on the character’s name.
“I did not mean to insult or disrespect anyone in any way,” the 36-year-old said on Instagram today, adding: “I commented because I was in disbelief of what I saw. I’m so sorry for the misunderstanding.”
Janna Nick Studios did not immediately respond to Coconuts’ request for further comment. It also deleted its Instagram account.
Screenshots of comments by Jannah and that post by her production company have been recirculated on other platforms. More than 30,000 tweets went up since yesterday with the hashtags #JannaNickIsGoingToJailParty and #JANNANICKGOINGTOJAILPARTY.
“In our context, pig/babi is literally an offensive term used to mock or devalue or someone,” a tweet by Malaysia’s BlackPink fan account said yesterday. “The fact that she did this to gain some cheap publicity for her flop studio is very low. De-platform her, every films and dramas of hers.”
