Actress Lily James has been in the news for reasons she'd probably rather not be recently, but we're more interested in her new Netflix drama, Rebecca, and more specifically, the hair transformation she underwent for the un-named role she plays in it (I'm a beauty editor!)
The show is based on Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel of the same name, a gothic thriller about a young woman who marries a wealthy widower and finds herself haunted by his late wife, Rebecca (it's basically about imposter syndrome, which we've all experienced, right?)
Lily is a natural brunette, so most likely wore a wig for the role to help give the classic story a modern update, alongside the symbolic make-up she wore throughout. But her hair colour saw a revival long before the show aired, with the likes of
"I tried to make her look very luminous and young at the beginning," hair and makeup designer Ivana Primorac told Refinery29. "She was all golden from being out in the South of France, and youthful and freckled."
"When she gets to the austere Manderley, I spent most of my efforts on making her skin look pale and luminous and giving her the groomed eyebrow of the period," Primorac goes on to say. "That was really it, because I think the simplicity of the whole thing lends itself to the emotional turmoil that she starts to go through."
Lily, who's current RL hair colour is brunette with some very subtle highlights through the ends, wears her blonde hair chin-length throughout, with a parted fringe and gentle wave, and we've got to say, it really suits her...
I may not live on a sprawling estate on the coast, but I think Lily just convinced me to get a classic bob...
