Lili Reinhart Took a 'Healing' Solo Trip on On-Off Boyfriend Cole Sprouse's Birthday

From ELLE

This time last year, Riverdale's Lili Reinhart shut down breakup speculation by posting a "sappy" love poem to then-boyfriend Cole Sprouse. (The two have not clarified their relationship status after breakup reports broke in July 2019, but their fall 2019 birthday Instagrams to each other—some showing PDA—implied they were still together. A source told People this May that the two tend to be on-off.)

A year later, all Cole and Reinhart's birthday tributes have been removed from their Instagrams following reports the two broke up earlier this year. And on Cole's August 4 birthday this year, Reinhart posted nothing about him. Instead, she revealed that she took a solo trip to California's Mount Shasta for "some mental clarity and healing."

She shared a gallery of photos from the trip, and the caption went on to say, "Very grateful to have the opportunity to travel to such a sacred place and reconnect with myself and God ☀️ hope all of you are using this time to take care of yourselves and reflect— it’s vital." (Sprouse didn't like the post, but Reinhart's friend and co-star Cami Mendes did, and fellow co-star Vanessa Morgan commented a heart and sparkle emoji on it.)

On her Instagram Story, Reinhart shared a video of herself late last night in the landscape at sunset, writing, "Wish I could go back already."

Cole was not without one big public tribute, though. His twin brother Dylan Sprouse dedicated an Animal Crossing-themed Instagram to him, and Cole liked it. (Reinhart didn't like Dylan's post for Cole, or Cole's birthday post for Dylan.)

"Happy birthday to the Tommy to my Timmy...or the Timmy to my Tommy. All that is important is we say the same thing with a slight delay and whether we short the stalk market. To almost 30 👴🏻👴🏻" Dylan Sprouse wrote to his brother.

What exactly is Reinhart and Sprouse's status these days? In May 2020, People and E! reported that Reinhart and Sprouse were quarantining apart, and the relationship was off for now, although that could change when they begin filming again.

"Distance is never good for their relationship," a source told E! at the time. "They decided not to quarantine together and knew off the bat that it wasn't going to work. They both know their communication is better when they are together in person, and it just wasn't working."

A month before, fans speculated that Sprouse cheated on Reinhart with Kaia Gerber after noticing that Reinhart took down several photos of her and Sprouse together on her Instagram and that her mother and sister appeared to unfollow Sprouse. Reinhart and Sprouse both spoke out against the cheating rumors.

Reinhart's response came first. She wrote in a since-deleted tweet, "Twitter is actually the most toxic form of social media. People are assholes for the sake of being assholes. Do you not understand karma? It’s fine if you don’t, you’ll understand when it bites your miserable ass."

She added on her Instagram Story, "Dear everyone on social media, Don't put down people for the sake of putting them down. Don't be a f**cking asshole. The world doesn't need anymore of that shit."

Sprouse, meanwhile, posted a series of Instagram Stories addressing the false allegations.

I tolerate a lot of rumors and slander from people online claiming to be my fans. Fans who feel entitled to my privacy precisely because I never indulge them. But attacking my friends, baseless accusations, leaking my address, and sending death threats are all qualities of insanity and fanaticism. Choose humanity, stop being 🤡

When I first stepped into a public relationship this was one of the foreseeable consequences. And while I truly never intended to indulge any part of my private life to the ravenous horde, it’s clear my restraint in updating them has allowed them to push their own agenda onto my habits and lifestyle. So in conclusion- please eat my delectable plump ass. (Making me post a goddamn white font insta story like a twice divorced mother of three)"

As early as February (pre-quarantine), Reinhart and Sprouse sparked breakup speculation when they posed separately at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party. A source told E! that they weren't seen together inside at all. "Lili and Cole arrived around the same time but did not see them hangout [sic] together," the source said. "Cole and Dylan stuck together majority of the night with Barbara but did not see any interactions between them and Lili."

In April, E! was told by a source that Sprouse and Reinhart were still dating. "Lili and Cole are still together," the source said. "They haven't been [in quarantine] together but haven't split. Their relationship is always up and down but they do talk every day and care very much about one another. Lili and Cole have been trying to be more low-key."

In May, E! was told that, actually, they're not dating anymore. "Lili and Cole were in a good place when Riverdale was shut down due to the coronavirus outbreak, but they isolated separately and distance has never been a good thing for their relationship," a source said. "When Cole and Lili are around each other often, things are very good. Their relationship is very intimate and affectionate, but things become much more complicated when they're apart."
