Saturday will see official bids tabled for a LaLiga star Arsenal and Newcastle both want, and a report has detailed which of the English duo are likeliest to succeed in what’ll turn out to be a bargain deal.
Both the Gunners and Magpies are in the midst of truly superb seasons. Arsenal are chasing their first Premier League title since 2004 and are on the cusp of adding Leandro Trossard to their forward ranks.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are an outside bet for the title and at the very least, will hope to secure Champions League qualification. Eddie Howe has also guided his side to the semi-finals of the League Cup.
Newcastle’s January window has been an altogether quiet one thus far, though according to the Athletic, they could be on the verge of securing an impressive coup.
It’s confirmed both Newcastle and Arsenal like what they’ve seen from Real Valladolid right-back, Ivan Fresneda.
The 18-year-old burst onto the scene in 2022 and has quickly established himself as No 1 in his position.
Fresneda already has four caps for Spain at Under-19 level and Fabrizio Romano namechecked the Magpies and Gunners as confirmed suitors if Fresneda leaves.
Per the Athletic, that’s exactly what could be about to transpire.
Fresneda available for half his release clause
They state the ‘latest jewel’ in Spanish football could leave Valladolid this month. What’s more, he’ll cost just half of his release clause.
His current clause is worth €30m, though Valladolid are willing to cash in right now for half that amount – €15m (approx. £13m).
Arsenal and Newcastle have both scouted the player and both have been in discussions with the his camp. From further afield, Borussia Dortmund and Rennes are in the mix.
Of the four, the Athletic state it’s Newcastle, Dortmund and Rennes who are likeliest to table official bids, meaning Arsenal are the rank outsiders at present.
Valladolid square off against Atletico Madrid on Saturday and it’s claimed official bids will be lodged after that game.
Fresneda fits the profile of player both Arsenal and Newcastle have targeted lately. Howe is known to want a long-term successor for 32-year-old Kieran Trippier on the books, and has previously looked at Cody Drameh of Leeds and Harrison Ashby of West Ham.
The fact Arsenal have turned Ben White into a right-back has lessened their need to sign the Spanish sensation to some degree.
Arteta also has Takehiro Tomiyasu on the books, though third-choice right-back Cedric Soares may be on the move to Fulham.
If the Portuguese does move across London in the very near future, Arsenal’s need for cover would increase. However, the report also notes any move to the Emirates would likely result in a six-month loan back to Valladolid to ensure his development isn’t stunted.
In any case, it’s Newcastle who are likeliest to win the race from an English perspective. Fresneda’s future should become clearer in the hours and days following their clash with Atletico on Saturday.
