Lidl shoppers and staff doused in diesel during 'extremely frightening' robbery in South Wales

A man poured the contents of a fuel container over a supermarket worker and threw diesel at staff and shoppers during an "extremely frightening" armed robbery at a Lidl store.

Police said the man entered the supermarket in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, in South Wales at around 5.15pm on Saturday.

Officers said he had a fuel container and he "poured the contents over a member of staff, demanding cash from the till".

Other employees and members of the public were also threatened and had diesel thrown at them.

Around £500 was stolen, while South Wales Police have recovered several items for forensic examination.

Detective Sergeant Tony Watts said: "This was an extremely frightening incident for staff and shoppers at the Lidl store.

"Extensive enquiries are ongoing to identify and arrest the person responsible."
