Education leaders are calling for an urgent inquiry into the A-level grading system after nearly two in five students in England had their results lowered .

Students were left distraught after exam boards downgraded 39.1 per cent of pupils’ grades from teacher assessments. Headteachers across the country vowed to appeal the results, with teaching bodies describing the process as "flawed".

It came after Education Secretary Gavin Williamson admitted that the new mock appeals process - allowing students to revert to their mock grades if they are unhappy with their grades - was "not ready".

Students and parents have condemned the "panic" changes, saying they have increased stress and reduced fairness.
