Let’s Talk About The “New, Sexier” Grey’s Anatomy
It’s a given that when a show is on for 16 seasons, the time slot is going to change. Grey’s Anatomy has definitely hopped around a few times (remember when new episodes used to air on Sunday nights?), and now, it’s happened again. When the show came back for the first time in 2020, Grey’s moved to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, a time slot it did have in the past. According to the showrunners, this means the show is about to get a lot sexier—but did that actually end up happening?
In a word: No. But the intent was there…kinda.
In case you’re behind on the news, showrunner Krista Vernoff has said Grey’s being on at a later time allows less family-friendly story lines, because apparently, one hour can change everything.
“There are different rules for a 9 p.m. show than there are for an 8 p.m. show, and we hope to take advantage of those rules,” she told Deadline in November. “Grey’s was definitely allowed to be a sexier show when it was on at 9:00. So we are excited by the change back to our original time slot.”
What actually ended up airing on Thursday night, though, was most definitely one of the least sexy episodes of Grey’s in a long time. To be totally fair, the storyline we left off with before the hiatus didn’t exactly lend itself to a lot of intimate moments. After the bar collapsed, the episode was focused on the aftermath and all the trauma that came with it as Bailey coped with her miscarriage news, which is way more sad than sexy, obviously.
And finding out Teddy’s first name is actually Theodora? Yep, that threw me for a loop too.
We know that Grey’s knows how to do steamy, because they’ve done it before (although it’s never quite hit the same level since Derek Shepherd and Mark Sloan bit the dust). With a show like this, they can make that magic happen again. But being that Season 16 hasn’t even hit its halfway point yet, there’s still plenty of time for Vernoff to make good on her promise for sexier episodes.
Judging by the fact that most of the relationships on the show are in a major upheaval right now—Meredith and DeLuca are on two separate pages, and Amelia is lying to Link about their baby, which could totally destroy Teddy and Owen’s engagement—it seems like Vernoff has her work cut out for her.
So bring on the bubble baths, the sexy scenes, the steamy stuff Grey’s pulls off so well when it wants to. Keeping a show from coding for 16 seasons is definitely no small task…but to keep fans interested, the showrunners are definitely gonna have to take advantage of this later time slot in a much better way than they did when it came to this mid-season premiere.
