Lela Rose’s Fall 2020 Show Was an All-Out Floral Fantasia
True to her name, Lela Rose is well known for infusing bits of botanicals into her collections. But this year at New York Fashion Week, Rose went all out, dreaming up a setting for her fall 2020 presentation that was every bit as enchanting as the dresses themselves.
Last week, Rose debuted her latest designs in a tiny shop tucked away in the West Village of Manhattan, which she had transformed into the chicest flower market ever. A slew of editors poured into the not-so-secret garden to peruse a collection of floral-motif gowns on display throughout the converted space, overflowing with pink logo buckets of blooms. An assortment of pansy-topped shortbread cookies on tiered platters covered a long banquet table, demanding multiple taste tests. And a few steps around the corner from the main room revealed a delightful little bar where the cocktails came chilled with edible-flower ice cubes. (Even the straws were in a petal print!) While it was hard to keep one’s eyes off Rose’s gorgeous dresses, I was equally bewitched by the decor. So I caught up with the designer to chat about her garden oasis.
ELLE Decor: What was your inspiration in transforming this shop?
Lela Rose: The New York City Flower Market—all things floral.
ED: Who did you work with for the florals?
LR: B Floral for the flower exterior, and Catherine Pearson for the interiors. Everything was realized in the shop itself with our creative director, Sam Masters.
ED: Can you tell me a bit more about the special decor pieces in the shop?
LR: I love Matilda Goad, and the hanging pendant light gave me the inspiration for the wicker-themed bar. The ceiling fixtures are from Circa Lighting, and the window blind is from Joss Graham. The table is from Ikea, but we stained the top green to fit in with the decor. We made the pink flower buckets ourselves.
ED: Which flowers are your personal favorites?
LR: Anemones, ranunculuses, and peonies.
ED: And what’s your favorite piece from the new collection?
LR: I always have such a hard time picking favorites...but here are three: the rose gabardine cape-back dress with the delicate crystal belt, the camellia wool-crepe gown with floral appliqué, and the floral prints on black crepe.
