Leeds Utd to sign 101-goal striker ‘in a heartbeat’ on one condition they may have already influenced
Leeds United are preparing a summer swoop for a long-admired Premier League striker if everything falls into place, a report has revealed.
There have been some issues for Leeds up front in recent months. Patrick Bamford has struggled to build momentum due to injury issues. Therefore, the club decided to buy Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim during the January transfer window.
They also have the likes of Rodrigo Moreno and Wilfried Gnonto who can contribute in attack. However, as a team, they haven’t scored as many goals as maybe they should have this season.
Hence, Leeds are still on the lookout for attackers who could be useful to them if they remain in the Premier League next season.
And according to Football Insider, they are “big admirers” of Southampton’s Che Adams, whom they would sign “in a heartbeat” if Ruben Selles’ side suffer relegation.
Southampton are currently in the relegation zone, whereas Leeds are one point above it. Although still in danger themselves, Leeds’ 1-0 win over Southampton recently may prove to be a crucial result in more ways than one.
Adams has been with Southampton since 2019, when they signed him from Birmingham City. This season, he has surpassed the landmark of 100 goals in his career at club level; he now has 101 to his name after spells with Oadby Town, Ilkeston, Sheffield United, Birmingham and Southampton.
Leeds have liked the look of Adams for some time. Seeing him drop down to the Championship, so long as they remain in the Premier League themselves, may provide an ideal opportunity to sign him.
Southampton are already at risk of losing several key players if they go down. James Ward-Prowse has been linked with Tottenham, while Mohammed Salisu is on Newcastle’s radar and Romeo Lavia should attract top-flight interest too.
Che Adams about to take next step
Now, it seems clear that Adams could be exiting St. Mary’s Stadium in the summer as well. Even if Southampton do stay up, his contract would only have one year remaining on it anyway.
At the age of 26, the Scotland international could be ready for the next challenge in his career. The report indicates there will be a few suitors for him by the end of the season.
As long as Leeds stay in the Premier League, which they are still fighting for, they could be one of the most sensible destinations he could choose, given their need for a player in his position.
After only getting four league goals in 22 appearances this season, there may still be some concerns about whether he can be the answer to Leeds’ issues.
But his five goals from five games on Southampton’s run to the League Cup semi-finals should serve as a reminder of what he is capable of.
Hence, Adams will be hoping to attract some top-flight teams in order to keep his career progressing as he approaches what should be his prime.
