A spectacular report has rowed back on claims made by Fabrizio Romano, with Leeds Utd emerging as a credible contender to hijack a Liverpool deal despite everything being “accepted”.

What Leeds Utd’s summer transfer window looks like will hinge largely on whether they avoid relegation to the Championship.

The Whites currently lay in 18th position with matches against West Ham and Tottenham remaining. Hopes are high two spirited displays since Sam Allardyce took charge will translate into points over the final two weekends.

In the event Leeds do beat the drop, Allardyce may well find himself rewarded with a contract beyond the current campaign.

According to the Daily Mail, avoiding relegation could also see Leeds hijack Brighton’s move for impending Liverpool free agent, James Milner.

The 37-year-old will leave Anfield on a free at season’s end. Newly-promoted Burnley showed interest in adding Milner’s leadership and versatility to their ranks, though per Fabrizio Romano, it’s Brighton who’ve seen personal terms accepted.

Indeed, Romano tweeted on May 5 Brighton had seen their “final proposal and all the clauses” “accepted” by Milner. A one-year deal is reportedly in the offing.

However, while Milner may well have verbally agreed to the move, a fresh report from the Daily Mail reveals Leeds Utd are preparing an eleventh hour hijack.

James Milner future not wrapped up just yet

They report Leeds are ‘in the hunt’ for Milner and confirm their chances rest on retaining their Premier League status.

While a move to Brighton may have the added appeal of potentially being in Europe next season, Leeds will seemingly be hoping to pray on Milner’s affection for his boyhood club.

Milner was on the club’s books between 1996-2004 and has always spoken highly of Leeds when quizzed on his former side since leaving.

The Mail acknowledge Brighton hold the position of ‘favourites’, though make no mention of Milner having already agreed to join the Seagulls.

Instead, it’s stated Milner simply has a ‘number of offers on the table’ and is yet to reach a final decision on where he’ll play next.

If Leeds to beat the drop, a move to Elland Road and not the AMEX certainly seems possible.
