Leeds United expert Phil Hay has backed a report that the Whites will sign a new left-back this winter, as he has a “strong sense” it will happen.

TEAMtalk exclusively revealed at the beginning of November that Leeds were planning an approach for Raphael Guerreiro. Indeed, that transfer is hoped to sort out a long-term issue at left-back.

The Whites brought Junior Firpo in to play in that position in 2021. However, the former Barcelona man has not covered himself in glory in his time at Elland Road.

What’s more, an injury has kept him out for a decent period this season.

As such, Pascal Struijk has deputised on the left-hand side of the defence. While it was noted that the defender has done well, his qualities would be better served in the heart of defence.

Leeds are by no means brimming with talent at left-back. With that being said, adding a new man into the mix to play in that position long-term seems a smart move.

Guerreiro seems to be an ideal player to sort out the problems the Whites are having.

If nothing else, the logistics of the deal make things easy. The Portuguese is out of contract with Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2023, and talks with the club over a new deal ‘have not progressed’.

That is one of the reasons Victor Orta has fixed his gaze onto Guerreiro.

Insider backs left-back pursuit suggestion

Transfer insider Hay believes those reports are on the button. The expert feels that a left-back could well be the priority for the January window.

“I do get quite a strong sense that there is going to be quite a strong temptation to look at a left-back, to try and find a left-back in January,” he said on the Phil Hay Show.

It could be that he feels Guerreiro will be the man the Whites are going after.

Guerreiro a good snare

Should Leeds pull off the transfer for Guerreiro, it would be a good signing for them. The defender is very experienced, having played 204 games for Dortmund.

Furthermore, he is used to playing in big games, having played Champions League football for six seasons.

While talks might not be progressing between him and Dortmund, it is clear they still think he is a valuable asset.

Indeed, the left-back has started 15 games so far this season.

He has chipped in with three goals – including two in the Champions League – and three assists. Leeds would be getting a very good player, should they manage to sign him.
