Leeds United have been handed a second opportunity to bring in Real Madrid legend Raul as their new manager, with the former striker reportedly building up to obtaining the world’s best role.

Leeds were linked with Raul following the sacking of American Jesse Marsch in early February. Spanish newspaper AS revealed Leeds had made contact with Raul’s representatives to see if he would be open to leaving his job as Real Madrid B team manager for a stint at Elland Road.

However, the 45-year-old rejected Leeds’ advances and it was eventually Javi Gracia who was named as Marsch’s replacement.

Gracia lasted just 12 games though as Leeds axed him at the start of May, with their Premier League status in serious doubt.

The Whites have brought in Sam Allardyce to try and keep them in the top flight, but that is not a long-term appointment.

As per Spanish source Cadena Ser, Leeds have been given another chance to convince Raul on a move to West Yorkshire.

Real do not feel he is learning enough while in charge of their second team, Castilla, and are pushing him to move abroad to help his development as a coach.

Los Blancos chiefs have decided they want another one of their former players, Alvaro Arbeloa, to take charge of Real Castilla. And this would force Raul to challenge himself at a higher level.

Raul could use Leeds as stepping stone

The reasoning behind this is that Raul – who was Real’s top goalscorer before his record was broken by Cristiano Ronaldo – could develop into one of the most exciting coaches in Europe before returning to the Bernabeu and becoming Carlo Ancelotti’s successor.

The Real job is arguably the most sought-after in world football, as the La Liga giants have won five out of the last nine Champions League trophies.

Real forcing the iconic former striker to leave Spain could result in him emerging back into the sights of Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Although, the only way Leeds would be able to tempt him to join them would be if Allardyce kept them in the Prem.

Raul would certainly be an interesting appointment from Leeds. He is regarded as one of the best strikers of all time. He led the way in Champions League goals before the devastating era of Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema.

Raul’s arrival could help to rejuvenate the Leeds fans and bring confidence to everyone involved with the club. On the flip side, the Spaniard is inexperienced when it comes to managing a senior team, so some Leeds supporters may be worried about his ability to get the best out of the players.

Andoni Iraola is another coach to keep an eye on as Leeds hunt for Allardyce’s replacement. Iraola has been heavily influenced by iconic former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, which could make him a perfect fit at Elland Road. Up to this point, Iraola has eluded Radrizzani, but that could change if Leeds keep pressing to get their man.
