Leeds have reportedly entered the race for a La Liga striker by submitting a ‘big offer’, though they will have to fight off Sevilla to land him.
Leeds sit 12th in the Premier League table after 13 matches. They have won four of those games and drawn three more, putting them on 15 points.
Whites boss Jesse Marsch came under severe pressure when they went four matches without a win between October 9 and 23.
However, he managed to salvage his position by helping Leeds pull off a shock 2-1 victory at Liverpool in their next outing. And they followed that up with a 4-3 win over Bournemouth.
While Marsch is fully focused on helping Leeds move up the table, director of football Victor Orta will be looking at which players he can bring to Elland Road next year.
And a new striker option has now emerged. According to Sport Witness, who cite reports coming out of Spain, Orta is interested in taking Osasuna centre-forward Chimy Avila to Elland Road.
The Argentine has been in good form this season, notching six goals and one assist in 13 La Liga matches.
And his effective nature in front of goal has ‘sparked interest’ from several teams across Europe.
Leeds submit offer for Argentine striker
One of these is Leeds, who are looking for a new goalscorer to compete with the likes of Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo for a starting place up front.
Leeds have entered the bidding for Avila and have sent Osasuna a ‘big offer’ for him, the report claims. It stands at £22million.
The attacker has a €30m (£26.2m) release clause in his Osasuna contract. But Leeds think they can bring him to England for less than this sum.
Osasuna’s La Liga rivals Sevilla are giving Leeds serious competition for Avila. They apparently want a new striker to provide backup for Rafa Mir and Youssef En-Nesyri.
Sevilla have decent money at their disposal and could cause Leeds problems in the transfer chase. Despite this, the report names Leeds as the most likely destination for Avila.
One reason for this could be them offering him a new challenge. Avila has had several seasons in the Spanish top flight already and would probably welcome a move to the Premier League.
It would give him the chance to test himself in a different league where different tactics are prominent.
Signing a new striker would have been unthinkable for Leeds in the 2020-21 season. This is when Bamford was at his best, registering 17 goals in 38 league appearances.
However, the Englishman has struggled with injuries since then. As a result of this and bad form, Bamford has only found the net twice since the 2020-21 campaign finished.
Clearly, Bamford’s lack of fitness has forced Orta’s hand and he is getting to work on a new striker arrival for Leeds.
