At least four killed as Turkey's wildfires rage on

The forest behind Turkey's popular resort town of Marmaris glowed an ominous red on Friday (July 30).

Firefighters, backed up by planes from Russia, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan, were battling a third day of blazes, with dozens of villages and some hotels being forced to evacuate.

More than 70 wildfires have broken out this week in provinces on Turkey's Aegean and Mediterranean coasts as well as inland areas.

The death toll has risen to at least four.

President Tayyip Erdogan said some 14 were still burning, but that efforts to tackle the fires were going in a "positive direction."

In some areas, people have been forced to flee their homes, and wildlife has also been at risk.

Firefighters in Manavgat rescued a cat suffering from thermal burns after being caught in a fire that killed three people on Thursday.

Another person was also found dead Thursday in the Marmaris area, which is located 180 miles west of Manavgat.

As of Friday, the blaze continued there, but authorities say residential areas are not at risk.

Turkish officials promised to hold anyone found responsible for starting the fires accountable.
