India, a tech giant, has made remarkable strides in the digital sphere. As Malaysia accelerates its own digital transformation, it is only natural to leverage on India’s expertise.

Digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI) were key topics in discussions between Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi.

This focus was further emphasised by Malaysia’s Digital Minister, Gobind Singh Deo, who accompanied Anwar on his official visit to New Delhi from Aug 19-21.

“Let’s look at how India has risen, particularly in technology. This, in my view, is something we should emulate,” said Gobind in the Indian capital. “We must learn from India’s success in technology and seek their guidance.”

This request for guidance was formalised in one of the eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) exchanged between the two nations. The MoU on cooperation in digital technologies was signed by Gobind and India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, at Hyderabad House on Aug 20, and was witnessed by Anwar and Modi.

According to the joint statement on the India-Malaysia comprehensive strategic partnership, both prime ministers welcomed the MoU on Digital Technologies and encouraged the early convening of the Malaysia-India Digital Council. This council will guide engagement in the digital realm and accelerate collaboration in areas such as digital public infrastructure, B2B partnerships, digital capacity building, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies like 5G, quantum computing, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things.

The leaders recognised the digital economy priorities of both nations and acknowledged the success of India’s Unified Payments Interface. They commended the ongoing engagements in payment systems between India and Malaysia.

Both sides also welcomed ongoing discussions between Start-up India and Malaysia’s Cradle Fund, along with other stakeholders, through the India-Malaysia Start-up Alliance.

The MoU aligns with the three key pillars of Gobind’s ministry: infrastructure, cybersecurity and digital trust, and talent development.
