European League of Legends (LoL) powerhouse G2 Esports announced on Tuesday (16 November) that Swedish bot laner Martin “Rekkles” Larsson has left the team to join Karmine Corp in the Ligue Française de League of Legends (LFL).

Dubbed as the “King in the North,” Rekkles is considered one of the best LoL players in Europe, winning four League of Legends European Championship (LEC) titles and participating in four League of Legends World Championships, even placing second in 2018, with Fnatic.

After eight years with Fnatic, Rekkles left the team for its long-time rival in G2 Esports last November.

Unfortunately, G2 were unable to qualify for Worlds 2021 after inconsistent showings in the LEC and only a fourth place finish in the LEC 2021 Summer Playoffs. This also marked the first time that Rekkles missed out on Worlds in his entire career.

G2 Esports then benched Rekkles and put him up for buyout in October. Despite a solid performance in the regional 2021 Spring tournament, the player initially had difficulty landing any offers in the LEC because of his buyout price of €1.5 million, as confirmed by a tweet from G2 CEO Carlos "Ocelote" Rodriguez Santiago.

G2 then attempted to loan Rekkles at a “double-reduced price, with an option to buy after [one] year”, according to an update by Ocelote but was stopped by a stipulation in the LEC’s rules. G2 appealed to change the ruling but was denied this request.

According to a report by a French sports website L’Equipe, Rekkles reached out to Karmine Corp at the end of last week to discuss the possibility of a transfer.

This resulted in an agreement between the two parties, with Rekkles joining the French team and moving from the LEC into the smaller French league.

A separate report by Dot Esports stated that Rekkles would be paid US$1 million over two years, with a buyout costing more than US$1 million.

Karmine notably had to break a previous verbal agreement with Norwegian Rookie Jakob "Jackspektra" Kepple after deciding to sign Rekkles into the team.

Jackspektra was released by Cream Real Betis.EU in November 2021 and is currently exploring his options as a free agent.
