Lava spews from La Palma volcano

On Saturday (October 9) the northern flank of the volcano collapsed, releasing large blocks of material and new lava flows.

The Spanish National Geological Institute also reported 21 seismic movements on Sunday (October 10) with the largest measuring 3.8 and shaking the ground in the villages of Mazo, Fuencaliente and El Paso.

About 6,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on La Palma, which has about 83,000 inhabitants and is the smallest of the Canary Islands.
