Lava Shoots Skyward From La Palma Volcano

Volcanic activity on La Palma in the Canary Islands showed no signs of stopping as fiery lava and ash shot skyward on October 17.

As of Friday, volcanic activity had claimed at least 1,835 structures on the island, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Scientists with Copernicus measured lava flows as covering more than 753 hectares.

The Spanish Department of National Security said a lava flow continued to threaten the town of La Laguna on the morning of October 18. El Pais, meanwhile, said several thousand pupils were returning to school in several municipalities.
