Lava and Fire Light Up Canary Islands Volcano

Eruptions continued at La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano on September 28, as local officials reported that lava had crossed a highway on the island.

The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (INVOLCAN) said that La Palma’s Carretera de la Costa had been traversed by lava on Tuesday as it flowed towards the sea.

This footage, taken on Tuesday evening, shows ongoing activity at the volcano.

Copernicus EMS said on Tuesday that satellite imagery indicated that some 589 buildings and 21 kilometers (13 miles) of roadway had been destroyed by volcanic activity since September 19. Credit: idafe.com via Storyful
