Lava From Cumbre Vieja Volcano Crosses Highway in La Palma

Lava from La Palma’s erupting Cumbre Vieja volcano crossed the island’s Carretera de la Costa highway en route to the sea on September 28.

Footage released by Involcan, the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute, shows a burst of smoke and ash erupting from the glowing lava as it crept across the highway on Tuesday evening.

Copernicus EMS said on Tuesday that satellite imagery indicated that some 589 buildings and 21 kilometers (13 miles) of roadway had been destroyed by volcanic activity since September 19. Credit: Involcan via Storyful
