Lava Creeps Towards Residential Areas of Volcano-Hit Spanish Island

The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano continues to take its toll on the Spanish island of La Palma, with El Pais reporting on September 23 that lava from the crater had destroyed 400 buildings and was endangering more.

Thousands of people have been evacuated, and firefighters have been attempting by various means to divert the damaging flow of lava away from houses. The scale of the task they faced is dramatically illustrated by this video from September 21, showing the lava encroaching on properties in the town of Todoque.
