Latvians sip on beers in yoga class with a tipsy twist

Beer yoga instructor Sendija Gabriela Oficiere said combining the two increased participants' ability to relax and unwind.

A small amount of alcohol even increases people's ability to balance, Oficiere said, as it reduces tension in their muscles. The beer bottles also act as small weights which adds to the challenge.

Participant Eventijs Gabrans said he only felt slightly lightheaded after the class, and added that drinking beer while exercising was probably healthier than sitting in one position.

Beer yoga originated at the Burning Man music festival in the U.S. but became more widely known after it launched in Germany four years ago.

The classes in Riga take place at a different bar or cafe for each session, helping to promote local beer brands.
