The Last of Us Adds BEEF Breakout Young Mazino Ahead of Season 2

The Last of Us continues to beef up its Season 2 cast. The latest addition: BEEF star Young Mazino, TVLine has learned.

Mazino will play Jesse in the HBO drama’s second season. The official character description calls Jesse “a pillar of his community who puts everyone else’s needs before his own, sometimes at terrible cost.” And if you’ve played The Last of Us Part II, aka the video game that’s the base material for the show’s sophomore run, you know that Jesse is someone who has important ties to Ellie… and that’s all we’ll say to keep everyone nice and unspoiled.

“Young is one of those rare actors who is immediately undeniable the moment you see him,” series co-creators/executive producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann said in a joint statement. “We’re so lucky to have him, and we can’t wait for the audience to see Young shine in our show.”

Mazino’s casting is the second big piece of Season 2 intel HBO released this week. On Tuesday, the premium cable network announced that Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick, Justified) will play Abby, “a skilled soldier whose black-and-white view of the world is challenged as she seeks vengeance for those she loved” in the coming episodes.

Mazino recently garnered a Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Emmy nomination for his performance as Paul Cho in Netflix’s BEEF. (See a full list of nominees.) His other TV credits include Prodigal Son, Tommy, Blue Bloods and New Amsterdam.
