Lake Dojran’s future brightens in North Macedonia

This Balkan lake had almost disappeared

In the 1990s, Lake Dojran lost two-thirds of its water

with local fisheries and tourism nearing collapse

To reverse the decline...

North Macedonia began pumping water from underground sources

Local fishermen say there are now more fish in the lake

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MICROBIOLOGIST AND ECOLOGIST, PETRA POP RISTOVA, SAYING:

"Now, the situation is improved. However, we still face consequences on the ecology of the flora and fauna of the lake. So that means that we still have sources of pollutions that are polluting the lake and still the level of the water is not properly regulated."
