Health experts, dermatologists and beauty gurus will tell you that the most important (but often overlooked) part of your skincare routine is applying sun cream.

But finding one that you - and your skin - like, can be tricky. Not to mention which one won't look too shiny under makeup. Do you go for cheap and cheerful, or is it better to splash out for a pricier, on-trend brand?

Well, we'd say a pretty safe bet is to go for a sun cream that's both affordable (as you're more likely to apply it liberally) and has a slew of rave reviews.

A sunscreen, for example, like La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50 which is down to £14.40 (from £18) now at Boots.

FYI: In March the brand launched a new update to the formula of its best-selling sunscreen (hence the name has changed slightly) which it claims improves the level of protection even more.

In a nutshell the brand has developed a new filter - Mexoryl 400. This protects skin against the most damaging, long UVA rays that are associated with signs of premature ageing. Plus it also protects against shorter UVA rays, alongside UVB rays (aka the ones responsible for burning).

Making La Roche-Posay's face sunscreen an even easier basket addition when you're browsing for your usual skincare and beauty essentials.

Why we rate it:

The lovely, lightweight product is part of the La Roche-Posay's bestselling Anthelios range, which launched over two decades ago.

It's a range that has been created for all types of sensitive skin, whether acne-prone or dry, while also offering extremely high broad spectrum sun protection. It also protects your skin from pigmentation, too.

All, crucially, this cult-favourite facial sunscreen is non-comedogenic (so it won't clog your pores or give you breakouts) and paraben and perfume-free, too.

Be aware that the formula is quite watery, so you need to shake the bottle well before applying. But it sinks in and dries quickly so it's easy to apply after moisturiser and before foundation. And doesn't leave you with shiny, greasy complexion.

There's no white residue, it doesn't irritate eyes and customers report it doesn't exacerbate sensitive skin or rosacea.

And the non-comedogenic claims really are true - loads of reviews state that this is the only sun cream that doesn't aggravate their skin.

What the reviews say:

With lots of comments highlighting that it doesn't leave a white cast on darker and Black skin tones, rave reviews about its light, non-greasy texture, its efficacy in protecting the skin, and the fact it doesn't cause any skin issues, this new formulation of La Roche-Posay's iconic sunscreen is winning serious fans too. One woman even said that her doctor recommended she use it.

  • "Brown skin girl friendly sunscreen. Love this sunscreen. Great on dark skin no white cast. I like the size of the bottle it may look small but it lasts ages, just remember to shake before use."

  • "Love this. Recommended by chance to me and best thing ever. Worth every penny and even though small tub it last months. Soaks in fast and doesn't leave a thick layer or sticky residue like normal suncream."

  • "Love, love this sunscreen. Absolute perfection - high coverage and so silky and light on the skin. This sunscreen absorbs well and is non sticky and very comfortable to wear. I really cannot fault this product."

  • "Holy Grail! This is hands down every year my sunscreen of choice! Now I got sent the new version 'Uvmune 400‘ to try and I’m not sure what exactly the differences are. I feel like the texture has gotten even smoother though. It wears so good under make up and on its own! Perfect to touch up with the LRP Anthelios Spray during the day.
