La Palma Volcano Spews Ash and Lava

Both ash and lava were observed coming from the Spanish island of La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano at two respective points on September 28.

Copernicus EMS said on Tuesday that satellite imagery indicated that some 589 buildings and 21 kilometers (13.5 miles) of roadway had been destroyed by volcanic activity since September 19.

This footage, recorded on Tuesday morning, shows both lava and ash spurting from separate points on the volcano’s cone. The source of the footage, idafe.com, a website dedicated to paragliding in La Palma, said “the upper [vent] ejects huge amount of pyroclastic ash, the lower very liquid lava.” Credit: idafe.com via Storyful
