Kolo Toure sacked: Wigan Athletic dismiss Premier League winner after less than two months in charge
Championship outfit Wigan Athletic have confirmed that they have sacked Kolo Toure after he failed to win any of his nine games in charge.
The former Arsenal and Man City defender penned a three-and-a-half deal when he replaced Leam Richardson at the end of November.
Under Toure, the Latics picked up just two points from his first seven league games in charge and they also exited the FA Cup at the hands of Luton Town following a replay.
Last weekend’s home 2-0 loss against the same opponents leaves Wigan bottom of the Championship and four points adrift of safety.
The job was Toure’s first as a manager following coaching roles with his native Ivory Coast as well as Celtic and Leicester.
Backroom staff Kevin Betsy and Ashvir Johal have also left the DW Stadium.
Wigan chief executive Malachy Brannigan said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank Kolo, along with Kevin and Ash, for their efforts during their time at the football club.
“Unfortunately, the results on the field have not been as we would have liked and as tough a decision as this was, the board felt it necessary to give us the best possible chance of remaining a Championship club next season.
“We know that this time of year is a key period for any football club, ourselves included.
“Therefore, we will now work swiftly and effectively to ensure the right person is appointed as the next permanent manager of Wigan Athletic, with the immediate objective of remaining in the second tier for next season.”
Speaking on January 18, Toure suggested that he has “a lot to learn” about his team.
“We all want the club to be in a better position but there is a process,” Toure told BBC Radio Manchester.
“When you come, you learn from your players and you have to make some adjustments, which we did. Conceding four goals for four games was a lot and every game we play now is more balanced which is good.
“I believe that we need to resolve that offensive final third which I’m sure we are going to do. We will get some points definitely I am sure.
“There is a lot to learn. We need to resolve those little moments where we are not focused in both boxes.”
