Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool “have to strengthen” as soon as possible but he “can’t see it” happening in the January transfer window.

The Reds have already signed Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window with the winger being in fantastic form for the Dutch side over the past couple of years.

But many people saw a midfield signing as more important with summer signing Arthur out injured and a number of their experienced players in that position underperforming.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham is reportedly a key target for Liverpool but that transfer is looking increasingly harder to complete considering their league position and lack of money at their disposal.

That could change if FSG manage to sell the club in the coming months and Klopp admits that he would like to make signings but it’s “all about what you can do”.

When asked if he was happy with the current squad, Klopp told a pre-match press conference: “We look outside [to transfers] as well. It’s not that we’re stubborn ad we keep these boys until 2060. It’s all about what you can do and want to do and each year is the same. Each press conference someone asks you to ask me about transfers during the window.”

On possible incomings, Klopp added: “Yes, we have to strengthen. Is this the right moment to do it? I can’t see it.”

Brighton beat Liverpool 3-0 on Saturday as the Reds dropped to ninth in the Premier League table.

On their reaction to the loss against the Seagulls, Klopp continued: “Losing the way we lost is bad enough but facing all of you doesn’t make life better. Questions were fair but after this [result] it’s difficult to give answers people want to hear.

“Everything looks different two days later, doesn’t make the game better though. The next game is waiting and that’s the good thing. That’s what we are preparing. The issues we had in the game [Brighton] were obvious.”

Now Liverpool face Wolves on Tuesday night in an FA Cup third round replay and Klopp insists he will have to make changes to his team.

Klopp said: “We go as strong as we can. Not all players who played the last game are available now, for different reasons. We will make changes, that’s clear. We need fresh legs. We have to make decisions about the lineup and we will.”

When asked what needs to happen next, Klopp replied: “You always go back to basics, that’s what you have to do. We have to be more compact, not only tomorrow. That is 100 per cent clear. We have to get back to solid defending.”
