Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool will “take what we get” come the end of the season, as he admitted it’s “too early to speak about consistency”.

Liverpool’s season has been below par. The Reds are currently seventh in the league, and have been struggling to string together consistent performances throughout the campaign.

They’ve suffered quite the drop off from finishing within a point of title-winners Manchester City last term.

In fact, it looks like the Reds will finish outside the Premier League’s top four for the first time in seven seasons.

Their current position of seventh is one of the best they’ve been in all season. Indeed, they’ve struggled to contend with those that are fighting at the top of the table.

Things have gotten slightly better for the Reds of late. Of their last six league games, Klopp’s men have lost once, drawn twice and won three times.

While that’s still not the level they’d expect themselves to be at, it’s a positive change from the majority of the season.

Given that upturn of form, there could be some expectation that they’ll be able to maintain that for the last six games and finish strongly.

Klopp gives miserly season goal

However, the manager is not expecting much from the season, as he detailed his goal for the end of the campaign in his pre-match press conference for the weekend’s game against Tottenham.

“We will take what we get. We didn’t start the season saying it will be fantastic but the season taught us a few things,” he said, quoted by Liverpool Echo.

“We want to create a basis to qualify for the best possible scenario. Squeeze everything out.”

In terms of European qualification, the Europa League seems the most likely scenario. That two sides above them are FA Cup finalists could give them an easier route to that goal, from seventh, but a better finish would obviously be the ideal scenario.

Klopp tempers ‘consistency’ expectations

Despite the good run of late, Liverpool have failed to maintain strong periods a lot this season. Indeed, they’ve only won three league games in a row twice this season.

Klopp has identified that a lack of consistency has hindered his side, and he doesn’t seem too sure that will change much.

“We did what we did. For a long period of time, it was really good. What we lacked this year was consistency. That’s what we have to change and it’s what we are working on,” he said.

“It’s too early to speak about consistency. I am happy with the performances in the moment as I saw a lot of things we want to see in games, and that’s really pleasing for the coach.”

“We want to focus on us, but we cannot ignore the quality of the opponent. There is always something to improve. I am absolutely OK with us at the moment, but we have to stay focused and show the most important prize in football is three points.”
