KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang today questioned the timing of Tan Sri Annuar Musa’s recent remarks linking him to the May 13 racial riots.

Lim said he wondered whether Annuar’s aim was really to prevent a similar incident from happening in the future or if he was attempting to defy the Rulers and test the limits of race, religion, and royalty (3R) issues.

“In my first speech in Parliament 42 years ago on February 23, 1971, I called for a commission of inquiry into the May 13, 1969 racial riots to find out their causes, assess the racial polarisation in the country and to make recommendations to prevent a recurrence of the May 13, 1969 racial riots.

“Would Annuar Musa support the formation of a commission of inquiry into the causes of May 13 riots? Would he get PAS and Perikatan Nasional to support such a commission of inquiry?” he asked.

Lim also asked whether Annuar or PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had ever declared their support for the Rukun Negara.

He said that Annuar’s recent comments reminded him of the film Tanda Putera that had erroneously blamed him for triggering the May 13 riots.

“I am also reminded of what the former Perak police chief Tan Sri Yuen Yuet Leng said about the ‘urination’ episode.

“Yuen not only confirmed that the May 13, 1969 ‘urination’ incident at the flagpole in the Selangor menteri besar’s residence was totally fictional, he rightly remarked that if there was any such a person who committed such an outrageous act, he would not have left the Selangor menteri besar’s residence alive,” he explained.

Lim added that Annuar did not have to urge him to expedite the filing of a defamation suit against him.

“Annuar should know that I will not allow him to relay lies, falsehoods, fake news and hate speech to defame me by insinuating that I caused the May 13 racial riots,” he said.

Yesterday, Annuar played down Lim’s threat to sue over his claims linking Lim to the racial riots of May 13, 1969 and urged Lim to expedite the filing of the suit.

Annuar said that he stood by his claim that Lim had caused the May 13 incident by fanning racial sentiments in his speeches at the time.
