King Charles III Diagnosed With Cancer; Postpones Public Engagements

King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer, according to Buckingham Palace.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, the palace said the cancer was discovered after the King underwent surgery on a benign prostate enlargement last month.

The type of cancer was not revealed, but the monarch will now begin “regular treatments” during which time he will postpone his public engagements.

Buckingham Palace said the King “remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”

It added: “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

The King, 75, has been more open about his health than his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his news has been met with well wishes from across the world.

“Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery,” said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. “I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”

Prince Harry has spoken to the King about the diagnosis and will travel to the UK from California to spend time with his father, according to the BBC.

The news appeared to be timed with the BBC News at Six bulletin, which opened with the statement from Buckingham Palace without any other headlines.

The King ascended to the throne after the death of his mother in September 2022. His Coronation took place last year during a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
