Jurgen Klopp has confirmed contract talks are underway with Roberto Firmino, as he has also questioned the forward being left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad.

Firmino has been one of Klopp’s most influential players for a number of years. Indeed, the forward has played almost 350 times for the Reds since he joined in 2015.

Sometimes, Firmino has slipped under the radar, with talents like Mohamed Salah and, before this season, Sadio Mane around.

That was the case last season, as Firmino was only able to play 20 Premier League games, due to injury. However, to this point in his Liverpool career, he has contributed to nearly 200 goals.

Even last season, when he spent a good period on the sidelines, he scored 11 goals and provided five assists.

His contract at Anfield is ticking down. Firmino would be allowed to leave come the end of this season, should he not renew his deal.

Given how important of a player he has been to Klopp, he will want to tie him down.

Reports lately have suggested Liverpool are willing to offer him a new deal. However, those reports also noted that the board wanted a reduction in the forward’s wages.

Klopp confirms Firmino talks

Since those reports surfaced, Liverpool boss Klopp has confirmed that talks have begun with Firmino. The German did not address if his wages would be cut.

“Normal conversations [are] happening as well, so we will see what happens there,” he said, quoted by 90min.

Firmino’s form this season will be another reason Klopp wants to keep him around.

The Brazilian has has scored eight goals – including three braces – and provided four assists in 19 games so far.

Klopp raises eyebrows at World Cup snub

Despite being in good nick of late, Firmino was left out of Brazil’s World Cup side. The 31-year-old has played 55 times for the Selecao, scoring 17 goals.

Klopp felt the World Cup snub was a big knock to his striker, as he thought he deserved to be included in the squad.

“It was a blow, definitely,” Klopp said.

“You couldn’t see it in training but definitely you could see, it was clear. It was a blow for me to be honest.

“I am in between, I am happy we have Bobby for more time, but I think he deserves it, I think he deserves everything in the world to be 100% honest.”
