Kevin Spacey formally charged in UK over sex offences

STORY: Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey was formally charged on Monday by British police over historic allegations of sexual offences.

In a statement, the London Metropolitan police said the American star faces five charges against three men.

They include four counts of sexual assault and a further charge of “causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent”.

Police said the alleged assaults had taken place between March 2005 and April 2013, mostly in London.

They involved a man who is now in his 40s and two men now in their 30s.

The 62-year-old is due to appear in a London court on Thursday.

The trial was widely expected to go ahead, after Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charges in May.

Spacey had said at the time, he was willing to go to Britain to defend himself, saying he was confident any trial would prove his innocence.

The actor had won Academy Awards for the Usual Suspects and American Beauty in the 1990s, and was once one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

But Spacey has largely disappeared from public view since late 2017, when multiple people began to accuse him of sexual misconduct spanning years and across the UK and U.S.
