India's coronavirus crisis is continuing to worsen, as the country reported its highest ever single-day death toll on Saturday (May 8). India's health ministry reported a staggering 4,187 fatalities over the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to just under 240,000.Cases rose by 401,078, increasing the total since the start of the pandemic to 21.9 million. But medical experts say the real numbers of both cases and fatalities are likely to be far higher than official tallies. While the country's northern and western areas have borne the brunt of the pandemic, southern states are now seeing a surge in infections.Tamil Nadu said it would move from a partial to a full lockdown on Monday (May 10), stopping public transport and shutting state-run alcohol retailers. And neighbouring Karnataka extended a total shutdown late on Friday (May 7).India is yet to impose a national lockdown as it did during its first wave last year, but around half of all its states have imposed a total shutdown.Although the country has administered over 167 million vaccine doses, its rate of inoculation has fallen sharply in recent days.Only around 2% of its 1.4 billion people have received the two doses needed to be fully immunised.

The European Union is sceptical about the usefulness of waiving patent rights to COVID-19 vaccines as a way to fight the pandemic, but is ready to discuss a concrete proposal, the chairman of EU leaders Charles Michel said on Saturday. Speaking to reporters before the second day of an EU summit in the Portuguese city of Porto, Michel said the way to fight the pandemic now was to quickly make more shots and lift export curbs on them in countries like the United States and Britain that make vaccines but do not sell them to others. "In Europe we took the decision to make exports possible and we encourage all partners to facilitate the exports of doses," Michel said after discussions with leaders of the 27-nation bloc on Friday evening.

A new Zulu king in South Africa was named amid scenes of chaos Friday night as other members of the royal family questioned Prince Misuzulu Zulu's claim to the title and bodyguards suddenly whisked him away from the public announcement at a palace. The controversy over the next king, a largely ceremonial role but one with great significance for South Africa and its 12 million Zulu people, has arisen after the death in March of King Goodwill Zwelithini, who had reigned since 1968. Zwelithini apparently named one of his six wives, Queen Mantfombi Shiyiwe Dlamini Zulu, as the “regent of the Zulu kingdom” in his will, but her death just over a week ago after holding the title for only a month has thrown the royal succession into turmoil.

As the clashes flared, several Turkish officials criticised Israel and called for other countries to voice condemnation, while a Foreign Ministry statement urged Israel to "immediately end its provocative and hostile stance and act with reason".

In a speech to a global fundraising concert to promote fair access to vaccines, the pope said the world was infected with the "virus of individualism". "A variant of this virus is closed nationalism, which prevents, for example, an internationalism of vaccines," he said in the pre-recorded video message.
