Kevin Costner Celebrates Milestone 70th Birthday with Throwback Photo from His Childhood: 'If You Can Believe It, This Is Me'

Happy birthday, Kevin Costner!

The actor-director celebrated his 70th birthday on Saturday, Jan. 18, by sharing a throwback photograph on Instagram of himself from his childhood.

"Thank you guys for the birthday wishes," Costner began his caption, alongside a black and white image of himself decked out in cowboy gear as a child.

"If you can believe it, this is me. I was chasing the cowboy life just about as soon as I could walk, and here I am doing it still," he continued.

Costner added: "Here’s to another year of keeping our sights set on our dreams."

A source close to Costner recently told PEOPLE ahead of his birthday that the star is "in a good place and having fun with his family and friends."

The insider added that Costner is not currently dating, however. "He is not seriously involved with anyone and not necessarily looking for anything more than that right now," they said.

The Oscar winner has had quite an eventful past year, with accomplishments behind and in front of the camera in both film and TV.

In June 2024, as Costner confirmed his departure from Yellowstone's season 5B, he also celebrated directing, writing and starring in the Western epic Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1.

The film premiered at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival on May 19, when it received a 10-minute standing ovation.

Following the applause for the film, Costner wiped away a tear, before giving a speech, during which he revealed he would "never forget" his experience at the festival.

Shortly after the festival premiere, Costner spoke with PEOPLE about how his storied career led to the creation of the project.

"What I can say is I've had an amazing life. I've been bruised, but I’ve had an amazing life and I'm grateful for that," he said. "I’ve had an incredibly unusual, and for the most part, beautiful life."

He also credited his family for their unwavering support along the way, stating that his seven children are the "anchor" of his life. Costner is a dad to daughters Annie, 40, Lily, 38, and Grace, 14, plus sons Joe, 36, Liam, 28, Cayden, 17, and Hayes, 15.

"They know that I have this chosen work, but honestly, I'm really clear about where my responsibility absolutely lies at the end of the day," he said.

"They’re like shooting stars," Costner added. "My life is driving up and down the freeway just trying to get the children where they think they need to be... but that’s part of the job."
