From Woman's Day

At 5 a.m., when most people are still snug in bed, Kelly Ripa's alarm clock is going off. While a pre-sunrise wake up would irritate most people, Ripa says "it's not bad."

"I have friends who are on the air at 5 a.m., and I always feel like I'm getting up at 5 a.m. anyway because I have kids," Ripa tells Woman's Day.

But these days, it's not the kids that are getting the Live With Kelly and Ryan host out of bed. Rather, it's a self-care routine that Rippa has been lacking for some time.

"Because all of my life has been work and raising my family, and making sure my kids had everything they needed, and making sure they were set," Rippa says. "And then when it came to me, the more I started researching what I needed as an older woman, as a woman 45 plus, what do I need in my life? And it turns out you need quite a lot."

Ripa's thorough morning beauty routine starts with dry brushing her skin and using a chilled jade roller on her face. This, of course, is all done while sipping coffee and curating her news items for the day.

More recently, Ripa has added some necessary nutrients into the mix with the help of Persona, a personalized vitamin program for which Ripa has become a celebrity brand ambassador. "My stomach was always upset and I never slept, and I would go on and on about these things," she explains. "Persona quickly identified that I just needed some ginger and peppermint. These are herbal supplements, but it would never occur to me to investigate that."

And the addition of these supplements has made a big impact. Though health and wellness has been part of Ripa's brand for decades — she works out seven days a week and eats what she considers a "clean" diet — she always felt that some small aspects of her life could be better, including her sleep. "I'm a morning show host; sleep is critical for me, waking up early is critical for me, and being alive and awake," Ripa says.

And she's right. As a morning talk show host, Ripa has to be "on" and be able to project her personality. "A lot of people watch our show when they're in the middle of something," Ripa says. "So I always approach my job like somebody right now is in an emergency room somewhere and they need something light, they need something happy, they need something joyful...if you can make that person happy or smile or even chuckle for a second, then you've done your job."

And when it comes down to it, that's what her morning routine and her dedication to health and wellness are all about — being her best so she can share her best self with others. "Even if I haven't had the best day or even if I woke up in a bad mood for whatever reason, you say 'OK, my job today is to make somebody else feel better.' And usually what happens is if you're trying to make somebody else feel better, you'll feel better in return, so it pays in dividends."
